Prins Hendrik 1915

I found a 1915 postcard and went for a walk, this morning. The trees are older, bigger now, but almost everything is still there, the barracks, the houses.
My aunt Elisabeth lived here, once upon a time. I visited her on birthdays, for tea in delicate china, petit fours, and (rather strange) Ricard. (She was the most beautiful girl of the village in her youth, I developed a taste for absinth, later...)

The folding Brownie, the papers, the developer - all wartime stuff.

War Horses

 Beek 1914: roaring Germany is on walking distance. We are neutral, but nevertheless: mobilization, horses get requisitioned.
Today, early morning: bikers, walkers, touristic atmosphere. In my wartime Ernemann I have 1949 Ansco triple S Pan, later developed in 1914 Eastman .

1914 Nijmegen 2014

 A century ago men were gathering at this school in Nijmegen. Mobilization. The HBS is gone, some 1897 houses opposite still standing.
The WWI "Trenches-Ernemann" still going strong, Eastman powders from that time also. Then, and now.

1915

In 1915 the Netherlands were neutral, and in Nijmegen the concert hall was built. The best acoustic in the land. The rest of Europe was destroyed by the Great War, Ernemann made this fine tiny camera so German soldiers could make heroic pictures in the trenches...

Well, as you see, the building still stands, nicely spoilt by flags and stuff.

I had Fomapan in the wartime Liliput, developed in Eastman powders from that time.

Es geht voran, mit Düsseldorf und mit mir. Vorige Woche noch ein kriechendes Krustentier, heute wieder fix auf die Beinchen. Ich habe immer noch den Hund huckepack, aber eppur mi muovo und bei Karstadt is Kaliskaya im Angebot, der Racke Rauchzart unter den Wodkas.
Und als ich dann zuhause doch noch zusammenbrach war das völlig in Ordnung.

Die alte Stadt am 14. August

Zur Feier des Tages nahm ich "real vintage" heute: in der 1910 Brownie 2 war fünfziger Plus-X, und in der 1929 Agfa Billy 1947 Turapan. Beide entwickelt in interbellum Eastman Developer Powders.
Resultat Q.E.E.,
 die Überraschung war das Angebot im Kaufhof an der Kö: Haferflocken-Kekse von Flora MAIZNICA aus Lettland.

Für nicht-Historiker: am 14. August 1288 wurde Düsseldorf eine richtige Stadt. Wird in September gross gefeiert. Hoffentlich - denn ich erinnere mich: vor 25 Jahren war kein Geld für eine richtige Feier (und hätte man fast das Hetjens-Museum verkauft - oder irre ich mich...?)
Übrigens: in 1230 wurde Nimwegen, wo ich geboren bin, Freie Reichsstadt; 'ne römische Stadt waren wir sowieso schon mehr als 12 Jahrhunderte...

 Working with old developer

This won't be a nice, in-depth tutorial, because it is still very much work in progress, but nevertheless...
You all know by now that I love to use old stuff: cameras and film, but also chemicals. (I use that word because I once had Russian seventies фиксаж... hà!)

Normally I use reliable Rodinal, at the moment "Promicrol" (the q.m. because it's not real Promicrol any more, alas), but if I can get it: Tabloid, Реактив (great stuff!), Montauk - the older the better.

Yes, there are some problems.
Fluids, like Tetenal Neofin, tend to disappear into thin air - and they don't work.



But the powders - the only problem, sometimes, is to get them out of the tube, or the envelope. When that is difficult, I just put everything (yes: developer, activator, glass, paper and stoppers) in the water, wait (leave it covered in the dark) and filter it. Works.

Wòrks? Yes, they work. Young seventies РЕАКТИВ or a century old   
Eastman, they will develop your film. The solution can be clear, cloudy or dark brown - that doesn't matter.

Developing time: I follow the decades old instructions. (! That's not me...)

Mostly I make 500 ml, and use that for let's say 4 or 5 films, but it dies rather suddenly - and in fact I am happy when I get one or two films out of it.

Dating: yes, that ìs a problem. The Ucrainian stamp it on, nice. Sometimes there is a manual with names of film, or the firm still exists. Often it's just educated guessing.



But always: surprise, satisfaction. Admiration, too. FUN.

Vierdaagse

First: the weather is not as bad as predicted. Second: this is the last film in the centenarian. Lasted almost six weeks, several films and what you see here is half frame (and 1973 Ilford) so chapeau, uncle Eastman!

My ± 1973 Olympus Pen only does 1/30 at F22 but I don't mind.

4-Days Marches in Nijmegen, and the weather is sàd. Let's just hope for the best...

The Eastman centenarian I prepared over one month ago still works, but it's getting tired as you see.

In the ± 1970 half-frame Чаика II was 1973 Ilford FP.

The students? Give them a bottle of beer and they won't mind rain nor rubbish...
And walk, walk, walk.

There's a lot of building going on in my home town, the big church seems to drown. We can only hope for the best, (knowing that in the past....)

Meanwhile the Eastman Developer is three weeks old and it still works fine, wow! The AgfaOrtho is over 25 years old, and the Смена more than 55, so the only fresh stuff this morning is the cappuccino at Délifrance. And their cookies! OMG they are good!
