I still had some 2011 Minopan in my 1967 Minox B and developed it very very badly, couldn't remember how to move the daylight drum but what a result. Exactly what I intended.

Well, the river was still disappointingly low, but I wanted to test the 1940 Fotokor and the sheet-holders for leak&dust. Not bad I think, I will have to clean it (and develop a bit better, yes you are right!) but the 135 mm Ortagoz performs well at 4,5 ( 1/100 on Fomapan 100 sheet 9x12)

Tradition: the first day of the year, early morning, I visit this little chapel. So I put a sheet of 1972 Plus-X in my pinholeHB and walked through an empty, rainy world. Calm, refreshing, Herons, Geese, Crows, Tits. The 4147 didn't perform very well, but nevertheless: Happy New Year!

This 135 was sold to me as "Perpantic 1946" and I have reasons to believe that. But then it's unbelievable: yes, it does need a strong contrast, and I do see some grain but hey: no fog, good usable image and she is 65 years old!

I gave her the overexp/underdev treatment, so ± 6 mins in the Rodinal, but I really doubt that was necessary.
In the 1938 Retina II, Xenon at 5,6 a couple of seconds.

Ich bin sicher: dieser Schlittschuhknirps wird den Kampf gewinnen, denn er hat Ausdauer und gute Laune (und Knie aus Stahl).
Drei Reibekuchen sind mir zuviel, aber der Wandersmann nimmt mir gerne Einen ab - danke, Freund!
Und nachher steige ich früher aus, denn der Spaziergang durch gaslichtbeleuchtetes Oberkassel ist ein Genuss.

Gottseidank hatte ich mein Stativ mit, denn plötzlich macht meine Praktica nur noch tick öhhhhhhhhh tick, sechs bis zehn Sekunden. Die Blende löst das Problem, der Nachmittag in Düsseldorf ist gerettet. War mit Wildblaubeermuffin und crêpe (wir sind ja nicht nur schicki-micki, sondern auch international...) sowieso wieder ganz gemütlich.

And then the Russian October Revolution that in fact took place in November.
And of course 1989, the end of the GDR - and of great products like the "aus Jena" lenses, made by Zeiss workers. Who, in the sixties, were allowed to construct the remarkable Werra.
So I took my 1964 Werra 2E to commemorate all that.

I live in the oldest city of the Netherlands. Ulpia Noviomagus, Romans all over the place, some supposed Charlemagne and that's it.
But also Henriette Presburg and Hermann Marx were born here, Mother and brother of Karl. Where the house stood it's all bright and clean now, I prefer the higher part, more like it was a century ago.

This october will have a slightly Russian flavour. Not entirely PC, but neither am I. In the bright sunlight I tested the KievTTL finder, filled with three 625's and some aluminum foil and it works perfectly.
The ±40 years old Orwo NP20 was a bit scratchy, the yellow filter was maybe not the right choise but who cared.

PS "some" means: make a little ball and push it in...

Three markets, three films

Nijmegen NL The market is all over the place and you can buy anything there: cheese, plants for your garden, shoes. Must be cheap, very cheap.

I had sixties Ilford HP3 (no date: test only) in the HB + Distagon 60mm.

Firenze I The San Lorenzo market is rather big, but very touristic: mostly bags, leather jackets and "stuff". But the Mercato Centrale is also there, for fresh meat and vegetables.

Canon F1, probably. (Kodak TriX?)

Düsseldorf BRD The market on the Carlsplatz looks very "dense", neat. But the food is first class quality ànd interesting, you'll be spoiled for choice.

Die DDR Orwo NP80, auch von 1973 hat sich sehr gut gehalten. Bisschen rauh und schmutzig, aber sonst okay.

Well, I'm not particularly fond of the Piazza Santa Maria Novella; the sun seems always very bright (=hard), here. The church is okay, the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica nearby is very interesting and of course an analogoholic hàs to visit the Museo Nazionale Alinari della Fotografia. Very nice.

Duomo, chiese e cappelle - churches all over the place in Florence, but this one is different: the San Nicola / Natività di Cristo, built 1899-1903. It's not in the centre, you'll have to look for it: Via Leone X. I like it very much, but it could do with a little snow!

I don't like "aria condizionata", I sleep with my window wide open. Or don't sleep: when the last tourists are gone the loud water-wagons start cleaning the piazza and when they are gone it's time for the merchants to build their market stalls. But from my window I can see the Cappelle Medicee, the mercato centrale is round the corner, my room (I have always number 12) has everything I want and the family who run the place is sooo nice! Remember this name: Lorena.

The third "owl I took to Athens" is the 127 Ferrania Ibis. Only 1/50 and that's it. But very small for a 4x6. Alas it had (the usual 127) wobble-film problems, this is the only negative I didn't have to crop. Non importa, mi ho divertito lo stesso.

...als ich mit der Linie 7 noch über die alte Brücke nach Düsseldorf fuhr, mit der Rolltreppe spielen im Kaufhof. Es gab noch Deftiges an der Kö, dicke Bohnen, Wirsing. Und irgendwo in der Altstadt ass ich drei gefüllte Paprikas weil die meinem kleinen Vetter zu exotisch waren! Überall wurde gebaut, immer schön für kleine Jungs wie wir.

Heute blieb die Strassenbahn schon vor der Brücke stehen: Störung. Im "Madrid" ass ich Ausländisches, ganz normal, und gegenüber ist Waffelkrieg. Es wird immer noch gebaut, und ich fand die Stelle wo Hässliches photographisch schön wird. Ich liebe diese Stadt sehr.

The 1959 Ferrania Eura is the Italian Click with a twist: the lens can be focused. And (look at the cut-stone step:) that seems to work!
(I'll test the two in the future.)
The sixties Agepe FF I used today had something strange: after rinsing I rubbed a white residue from the back - never seen that before. Otherwise it was fine.

Today "our" bridge celebrates it's 75th birthday and for me there's a story to it. Of course the official opening had to be tested, by a lieutenant in a car. And as he was my mother's (then) boyfriend, she became the first woman to drive over the new bridge. Whoa!

Of course I took this picture with the 1936 KW Pilot6, on 1960 Ansco, 1/25 sec F7,7 (you can see the back paper etc.) More info about this film on flickr.

Small pic: at 6 secs all traffic disappears, but the back paper fog becomes very visible. (see comment)

Tribute to a great film

This was my last March 1970 Selochrome. The nicest film I ever put in a camera. Even after 40+ years it performed impeccably: no fog, no loss of sensitivity, smooth and sharp, no dried out sticky paper.
In the 1955 Brownie 620. Those were the days...

...in der Bolkerstrasse. Wird gerade umgekrempelt, aber auf der A57 war Sonne und die Landschaft trocken und dürr, also: Café Madrid. Eine Taube setzt sich unter meinem Stuhl, zusammen geniessen wir Brot und Öl, und Wein aber dafür ist die Taube zu jung.
Dann noch mal kurz zum Kaufhof an der Kö weil Herta's beste Frikadellen alle sind und darauf möchte ich nicht verzichten.

Today my home town was officially the hottest town in Europe and I can confirm that. And dry: this is not a white bike - it's covered in river sand (normally it's under water!) I underexposed, so the red filter made everything very gloomy (= useless...)

The technique: I had a F 128 hole in my Hasselblad-bodycap, on sixties Agepe FF;
Jeroen had at least F 256 and < 1965 Plus-X in his HB.

In the Christmas Lecture I spoke about converters etcetera. But they were for sophisticated cameras: CRF, SLR and TLR.
So this time it's about the simple and cheap boxes and how good they can be - sometimes.

I have made nice pictures in the past with the not só close-up (8-13 feet) in-built lens. But in the test, as you can see, it was rubbish.

The ± 1946 Brownie Target 616 is the outsider: close-up means removing the first meniscus, not add an extra lens. It's on a spring, very handy: you cannot forget it. Focus 5-10 feet and the picture is indeed sharper. The whole picture, also beyond ten feet... So the single meniscus is better than the double.

And then there is the 1930 Red Brownie 2. You'll have to buy that extra "portrait attachment nr.1" but it is great! "The subject must be exactly 3,5 feet from the lens" (you know how severe miss Kodak can be...) and then it is very sharp. This is the camera I'll take on my holiday in stead of the Hasselblad and I am nòt joking!

The last, oldest one is the pre-1930 Ensign 29. The extra lens is removable attached to the camera, focus around 6 feet and it definitely works better than visible in the test-picture. Reason: I have to put 127 film in the 29 camera and EFKE film wobbles always. (In all my 127 cameras!) So let's not blame Houghton-Butcher.

Eine kleine Japanerin lässt mich Photos machen mit ihrem Telefon. OMG! Wie superschnell und bequem ist doch meine 1938 Frankenstein. Und bitte kein artistischer Kram wie Komposition oder Perspektive sagt sie - oh Hokusai, deine Kinder!
Im Altstadt Restaurant finde ich mehr Flexibilität: da krieg' ich auch was nicht unbedingt auf der Karte steht.

Wartime: the film is shorter (3/4) and has all kinds of other features: double name (spy?), double back-paper (place black paper over red window: highly sensitive 32° Scheiner = ±125 ASA; luckily my Duo620 has metal window-shutters...)
Yes: it hàs lost sensitivity after those seven decades, but what a nice grain has the image that is still obtained.

I almost always carry my Frankenstein. Looking up, bikes on a balcony, or a hunter. Biking tourists, talking ladies, granddad and the barrel-organ.
There's always something to see, nothing special, just the world.

My uncle has fallen in love with his (Finnish) nurse - he is a
shot-down (half-German)
war-pilot, they will marry and have a son.
My (Dutch) little brother is one year young,
and the (Canadian) Target 616 is still a modern camera.

Auf der Rheinwiese wo ich (omg!) vor fünfzig Jahren mit den Schafen spielte, spielen heute Männer mit der Luft. Man hört nichts - Sonne, Wind.
Eigentlich wollte ich die Nahlinse meiner Click testen. Nach der Ofenkartoffel mit Räucherlachs und zwei Gläschen Prosecco auf der Promenade hab' ich's gelassen. Frühling.

Experience pays: last year I had some HPS so I knew it was about 40 ASA and 7 mins in Rodinal. A bit fog, border-problems, but perfectly usable.

Small pic: # On the Sunny Side of the Street (1930 McHugh/Fields) and the 1938 Tessar on Nagel's 620 sharp as ever.

...and comparing sixties (no box, but a metal spool) Tri-X and the 1960 Super Hypan.
Both in the seventies Zenit 80.
The Kodak went probably down to 25 ASA, the Ansco had lost it almost completely but I still have one roll. Both had of course some fog. The third one is Ilford's HPS, 620, so in the Kodak Duo620. That's tomorrow, look above.
Interesting: Tri-X was 400 of course (small pic), Super Hypan was 200 ASA but Ansco said it was 500, and the HPS would be 800 but everybody always doubted that.

PS My scanner still has that "banding"-problem. Hitting it didn't help, nor did shouting. Ideas? SEE COMMENT!

1927 Kern 150mm

Once upon a time I owned a Kern 9x12 camera. But, I took it apart; I was young, what did I know. For some reason I kept the lens. Yesterday I made a lensboard and put it on my Linhof. And look how sharp this 1927 lens is! A bit dirty, the high contrast is probably the Fomapan100 film and my scanner has also some problems, unlike the Compur that fires like a young god. Thank heaven for little girls and big shutters!
